Mid-South under winter weather advisory

(WMC-TV) - A winter weather advisory is in effect Sunday for much of the Mid-South.

Shelby County, Dyer County, Tipton County, Lauderdale County, and Fayette County are among more than a dozen areas that are under a winter weather advisor until 6 a.m. Monday.

The National Weather Service and Action News 5 meteorologists are predicting light freezing rain, sleet, and snow.

School districts across the Mid-South have begun reporting Monday closures due to the weather that moved in.  Click here for a complete list of school and business closings.

The Shelby County Office of Preparedness is also on alert for freezing rain.

"We know lots of people will be out tonight for Super Bowl parties," said Director Bob Nations, Shelby Co. Office of Preparedness. "However, citizens need to keep a close check on the weather and be prepared to get home early. We don't want people on icy roads."

Shelby Co. Public Works crews are prepared to take to the streets with salt and sand trucks.

Residents in Shelby County, and surrounding areas, are asked to take precautions and check on relatives and friends, especially those who are elderly, disabled, or live alone. And pets should be sheltered.

Here are some winter weather safety tips provided by the Shelby Co. Office of Preparedness:

- Avoid being outside if possible.

- Dress warmly and wear layers of clothes.

- Keep water lines dripping, insulate outside water faucets, and have plenty of blankets should power go out.

- If using a generator, make sure you vent the exhaust.

- Never use charcoal indoors. The vapors are deadly.

Vehicle safety

- For vehicles, check the antifreeze level, windshield wipers and have a full tank of gas.

- Always have a heavy coat, hat, gloves and walking shoes in case your vehicle gets stranded.

- Keep an emergency kit on board with first aid materials, bottles of water and snack foods.
