Snow days make mess of high school basketball schedule

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Bowsher and Rogers High Schools played a rare Sunday basketball game.

The reason?

This is the third time it has been re-scheduled because of the recent Arctic Blast.

It's been a real nightmare season for athletic directors in Toledo Public Schools.

One basketball game after another has been postponed then re-scheduled because of the nasty weather.

TPS has already gone through eight calamity days, three over the state limit.

The high school athletic directors have worked together to find new, agreeable game dates.

But they also need to keep in mind the kids must deal with academics that include make-up assignments.

"I think it's really tough for these guys to make-up days not just because of the athletics but because we need to be in compliance with what the state is telling us what to do. Adds a lot more work to their table," said Bowsher principal Linda Meyers.

Teams have been forced to play more than the usual two games a week, sometimes back to back.

To complicate things, two additional season games were added to each school's schedule this year.

It's like piecing together a jigsaw puzzle for TPS athletic directors.

"It's been very difficult trying to find a gym for Rogers, Woodward. And also had a Clay game we had to re-schedule trying to figure out what their schedule was. It's just become a headache," said Bowsher athletic director Terry Reeves.

Coaches worry their players will lose their stamina because they lose practice time on calamity days.

But they're still ready to take the court.

"We practice a lot before the snow. Fortunately, the things we do aren't really complicated. The things we do we're able to do right now," said Bowsher basketball coach Joe Guerrero.

For now though, all the games will be played just as long as Mother Nature cooperates.
