CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -
The University of Cincinnati football added 28 student-athletes to its roster, including four who enrolled in January 2014 and will participate in spring football, head coach Tommy Tuberville announced Wednesday.
Wednesday is the beginning of the NCAA initial signing period for football.
QB Jarred Evans (Queens, N.Y./West High/Santa Barbara CC), QB Hayden Moore (Clay, Ala./Clay-Chalkville), CB Linden Stephens (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid/Fork Union Military) and LB Marcus Tappan (Pasadena, Calif./La Salle/Glendale College) made up the early enrollees. Moore and Stephens have freshman eligibility while Evans enters with junior eligibility and two seasons to play and Tappan has sophomore eligibility and three seasons left.
"It's a solid class that will help us," Tuberville said in a press release. "There are some very skilled guys with athletic ability who we believe will grow and develop into pretty good football players. We were able to identify our needs and go after them. We recruit as much speed and quickness as possible. It always starts with speed, whether a lineman or skill player. That is my philosophy."
The class was heavy on linemen with 10 signing, seven on the defensive side and three on the offensive side. The signees also included four cornerbacks, two linebackers, two safeties, two quarterbacks and one running back. The Bearcats also added four preferred walk-ons to the roster.
UC added players from 11 states with nine hailing from Ohio, including local product Tyrell Gilbert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton), one of the top-rated recruits in Ohio.
"I think we got the best player in the city," Tuberville said.
"We made some progress this year in the Queen City and the state of Ohio," adds Tuberville. "We went to Cleveland, Toledo and Columbus and signed players. Every coach has an area in the state and we will continue to make progress in Ohio."
The Bearcats are scheduled to begin spring ball on February 28, 2014 with the 15-practice session closing out in early April.
