LEXINGTON, KY (FOX19) -

Rupp Arena in Lexington -- home to the University of Kentucky Wildcats -- is about to get a makeover.

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear and Lexington Mayor Jim Gray Monday unveiled a new design for the Kentucky and college basketball landmark.

The city said features include:

  • A transparent skin to bring the energy inside to the city outside
  • A "Catwalk" leading from the university to the arena district;
  • Outdoor video screens
  • Chair back seats throughout the arena
  • Upgraded technology (wireless Internet)
  • A new center hung scoreboard.

Gray said the city has been working on plans for Rupp Arena and a new convention center for three years. The estimated cost for the arena and convention center is $310 million.

Rupp Arena opened in 1976.
