BEACHWOOD, OH (WOIO) -

17-year-old senior at Beachwood High School, Drake Smith, dreams of being an editor in television production, but the reality of that dream comes down to whether he gets a life-saving kidney transplant and how soon.

Drake, when healthy enough, shoots and edits concerts and football games in his spare time.

Two years ago Drake was diagnosed with Alports disease, an acute progressive kidney disease. It is found in only 1 in 50,000 newborns.  In time, the disease will create eyesight and hearing loss, eventually leading to kidney failure. For treatment Drake does dialysis three times a week.

"It's been pretty hard I guess for the past couple of years," Drake said. "It has gotten to where it's taking a toll on me emotionally and physically."

It hurts Drake's mother Andrea to see her son in pain, not eating, being sad, and being sick.

"Sometimes he don't get out of bed for a week or two," Andrea Smith said. "I want nothing more than for him to have a second chance."

Drake is still looking for a donor that can save his life and give him that second chance.

"They probably would not understand how much they would be giving me," Drake said. "This has been a really bad part of my life and with them they would help change that for me."

If you have a type-B or type-O blood type, you can contact the Transplant Institute at University Hospitals by calling (216)-983-5138.

You can also donate through the Drake Kidney fund by going to www.GoFundMe.com/1kidneyfordrake or emailing KidneyForDrake@gmail.com.
