(RNN) - Legendary funny man, musician and entertainment pioneer Sid Caesar has died at the age of 91, according to a family spokesperson.

Caesar developed his act in New York City night clubs and went on to star in the Emmy-winning TV hit Your Show of Shows. It was a groundbreaking, 90-minute sketch comedy program that made him a household name.

The show also made eventual stars out of its writers - Woody Allen, Mel Brooks and Neil Simon to name a few - and featured Caesar with longtime comedic partner Imogene Coca.

Caesar had roles in a handful of movies, though they were some of the most memorable in film history - including It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and Grease.

With 67 credits in his long career, his last role was in 2004 in Comic Book: The Movie as the Old Army Buddy.

Caesar was awarded a Hollywood Star on the Walk of Fame on Feb. 8, 1960.

By the 1970s, alcohol and pills had taken a toll on his body and on his acting career. Instead of taking a break from working to recover, he counseled himself while working on a film in Paris and eventually overcame his struggle.

His wife of 67 years, Florence, died in 2010. The couple had two daughters and one son.

Isaac Sidney Caesar, the youngest of three boys, was born to immigrant parents from Russia and Poland on Sept. 8, 1922.

He was a saxophonist who got his start in entertainment as a young man. While in the Coast Guard during World War II, he was cast in military comedic revues.

By the late 1940s, he had made his first appearance on Broadway and received rave reviews for Make Mine Manhattan.

His first pairing with Coca was in 1949 when they were both cast in the TV show Admiral Broadway Revue, which lasted less than five months.

The next year, Your Show of Shows hit the airwaves. Caesar had a streak of best actor Emmy nominations from 1951 through 1958, and he won twice.
