Local teacher a finalist for $10,000 grant

Mary Ernst, a fourth grade teacher at Springmyer Elementary School, could receive $10,000 to go towards revitalizing her classroom.

Ernst is one of ten finalists selected for a grant from Great American Insurance's program that rewards cash prizes to three teachers and their schools.

Over 450 entries were submitted for the Great American School Spectacular and Ernst was the only Ohio finalist. If she wins, Ernst plans to purchase a set of tablets to allow students to work together in completing math projects, developing presentations, starting blogs and creating a math wiki to help others.

The winner is selected by a public vote. Now until February 21, anyone can help her win by voting at GASchoolSpectacular.com.

"This is huge for our school, district, and community," said a release from Springmyer. The Oak Hills School district is encouraging people to share the news through Facebook to get the word out about voting.
