Teen killed in Hamilton officer shootout had prior run-ins with the law

HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) -

Police have released new information about a Hamilton teen killed in Saturday's police shooting.

Brandon Keeler, 18, has a criminal past. Keeler had two prior run-ins with the law as a juvenile.

Keeler was killed on Saturday morning after gunfire broke out between the teen and Officer Chad Stafford of the Hamilton Police Department.

Officers responded to 911 calls reporting a man walking around the 1100 block of Sipple Avenue shooting rounds in to the air. Upon arrival, authorities say they found 18-year-old Brandon Keeler firing shots with an assault rifle.

Keeler then fired at officer Chad Stafford, injuring him with a bullet that grazed the top of his head.

Police Chief Scott Scrimizzi says that although injured, Stafford never took his eye off the suspect and was able to return fire, striking and killing Keeler.

Stafford communicated with dispatch himself to tell them he was shot and request an ambulance. Air care responded to the scene and transported him to UC Medical Center.

44-year old Stafford, a 16-year-veteran of the department, is a firearms instructor and former K-9 handler. Chief Scrimizzi says the force-on force-scenarios Stafford was trained in saved his life.

After receiving stitches to his head wound, Stafford is reportedly in good condition and expected to make a full recovery.
