SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -
Police have identified the suspect involved in Tuesday night's standoff with police at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.
Police said Eddie Bonafe, 54, of West Springfield shot and killed himself after a tense, four-hour standoff at the hospital.
Springfield police along with the Massachusetts State Police quickly surrounded Baystate Medical Center, just before 8 p.m. Tuesday night.
They responded to reports of a man with a gun on the property.
Upon arrival, they found Bonafe sitting in his red Fiat vehicle in the parking lot outside the emergency room with a gun to his head.
They said it all stemmed from an argument between Bonafe and his wife inside their car in South Hadley. The argument continued in West Springfield where Bonafe allegedly shot his wife.
Police said he then drove her to the hospital.
"The wife was brought in with one gunshot wound she is expected to be OK," said Sgt. John Delaney of the Springfield Police Department.
The hospital was put on a partial lock down while police zeroed-in on Bonafe.
"At no point was any staff or patients in any danger," said Delaney.
Police said Bonafe was distraught over the shooting.
Hostage negotiators were called in to stabilize the situation.
"We have hostage negotiations going on with the suspect to turn himself in," said Delaney.
But after nearly four hours of negotiating, things took a deadly turn.
"That suspect inflicted a gunshot wound to his head," said Springfield Police Commissioner William Fitchet.
Bonafe was rushed into the hospital where he was pronounced dead some 20 minutes later.
Fitchet said his team did everything that they could to diffuse the situation, and he is proud of their efforts.
"They used great restraint. They had many opportunities to use force. They had a gun waved at them and they didn't. I'm proud of the officers and the restraint that they used," said Fitchet.
Police also note at no time was the gun brought into the hospital.
The incident remains under investigation.
