South Toledo water main break floods streets, forces closures

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

One area is flooded and several side streets are closed after a water main break on Broadway Street near South Hawley Street in south Toledo.

City leaders say the 30-inch pipe broke just before midnight. Crews have working on the burst since then. We're told these waterlines are some of the oldest in the city of Toledo.

Broadway is flooded from S. Hawley to Stebbins Street. Crews are not sure how long it will take to resolve the break. The area has been closed off to traffic while water continues to gush out. According to the city's water department, crews have to excavate the road still and fix the break, which could take hours.

Some neighbors say they're thankful there's no damage to their homes, because most of the water went downhill into Danny Thomas Park.

Crews are working around the clock and hope to have all repairs done by Thursday morning. Engineers and the state department will inspect the road before opening it again to make sure it's safe for drivers.
