COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

An online petition looking to grab the attention of the folks who hand out the Oscars hopes they can gather enough signatures to honor a 27-year-old former Columbia woman who was killed while filming a movie in Georgia.

Sarah Elizabeth Jones, a camera assistant, died when she was struck by a train last week while working on the Gregg Allman biopic, "Midnight Rider".

The petitioners are hoping they can get the Academy to add Jones to the annual Academy Awards Memoriam, a segment that honors former actors, actresses, directors, and film workers who died over the course of the previous year.

"Crew members are the unsung heroes of film and television production who work long hours and sometimes very dangerous conditions for the love of filmmaking," said the petition. "Sarah Elizabeth Jones was one of us."

The petition runs until Feb. 28 at 10 a.m. So far, it has garnered closed to 14,000 signatures and has already met several signature goals.

Mourners have also taken to Twitter to call for greater safety measures on film shoots through the hashtags #SlatesForSarah and #SafetyForSarah.

A memorial will be held for Jones on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Ashland United Methodist Church in Columbia. There will also be celebration of Sarah's life at 5 p.m. at Saluda River Club.
