CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - No longer will your Delta SkyMiles be based on how far you flew. They'll be based on the money you spent for your tickets.
That will likely have a negative effect on middle class travelers who buy tickets way in advance when they find a good deal. But it reflects a growing trend in recent years of airlines focusing more and more on the bottom line.
Businessweek predicts American and United will follow suit.
Delta's strategy is to focus on business travelers whose companies spend lots of money and buy tickets often. The Wall Street Journal reports that the top 4 percent of Delta's customers account for more than 25 percent of the airline's revenue.
Delta says the changeover won't take effect until January 1, 2015 so customers have plenty of time to make plans under the current program.
