Cincinnati Museum Center archaeologists and its teams have excavated local privy sites dating from the late 1800s.
The free exhibit "Medicine, Marbles and Mayhem: Unearthed Stories from 19th-Century Privies" runs through May 26.
One segment of the exhibit, "The Policeman and The Privy," is about policeman Charles Dustin. His gun, uniform and ammunition were found in a local privy site dating from 1899-1920.
"No one knows the exact reason why Dustin dumped his gear down the privy but records provide context to his story which includes arrests, time in jail and a stint in a local mental facility," the museum center said.
The exhibit is a collaboration between Northern Kentucky University masters of public history and anthropology students and the museum center. The NKU students helped to curate, design and execute the exhibit.
Archaeologist Bob Genheimer and teams excavated the artifacts.
The exhibit is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday in the John A. Ruthven Exhibition Gallery.
