The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning in anticipation of a system expected to impact Central Virginia on Monday.
The City of Richmond, Chesterfield, Henrico, Hanover and Amelia are all included in the Winter Storm Warning, which will be in effect from 7:00 a.m. Monday to 12:00 a.m. Tuesday.
Because the storm is expected to begin as rain, VDOT crews won't be able to pre-treat area roads. While VDOT is over budget for this winter, that doesn't mean less crews will be out on the roads. A VDOT representative told NBC12 even more snow plows will be out this go round.
Here's the latest forecast from Meteorologist Andrew Freiden:
Andrew Freiden's First Warning Forecast: 7am today: 32°, 4pm today: 20°
** WINTER STORM WARNING through midnight
WINTER STORM TIMING:
Expect a brief period of rain in the predawn hours that will mix and change to sleet before sunrise. Sleet, heavy at times will then mix with, and change to heavy snow by mid to late morning. Snow, heavy at times will continue into the afternoon...tapering off by late afternoon/early evening from west to east.
Temperatures drop into the low 30s by 7 a.m. By Noon, we should see readings in the lower 20s. We'll dip into the upper teens by early evening!
Road conditions will deteriorate rapidly through the day Monday. Any standing water from overnight rain, sleet, and slush will freeze quickly as temperatures plunge through the day. Road chemicals will have a tough time keeping up, particularly once past sunset Monday evening. We'll see temperatures dip into the single digits in many spots by early Tuesday morning. Conditions are likely to be very slick on your way into work Tuesday. Side roads may be tricky for a few days. Several days of freezing temperatures may also cause school cancellations into at least the middle of the week.
Louisa, Fluvanna, Western Goochland, northern Hanover, Spotsylvania, Caroline, Tappahannock: 7-12" Metro Richmond, Chesterfield, Tri-Cities, Cumberland, Powhatan, Amelia, Northern Neck, Middle Peninsula: 3-6" Wakefield, South Hill, Chase City, Dinwiddie, Disputanta, Waverly, Franklin, Norfolk: 2-4" South of the Virginia Border: 1"-2"
