Signs your teen is suffering from an eating disorder

(FOX19) - Dr. Sarah Lavanier sat down with Tracey Johnson this morning to talk about eating disorders and how to prevent them in your children.

20 signs (According to that your child could be suffering from an eating disorder:

  • Refusal to eat and denial of hunger
  • An intense fear of gaining weight
  • A negative or distorted self-image
  • Excessive exercise
  • Flat mood or lack of emotion
  • Irritability
  • Fear of eating in public
  • Preoccupation with food
  • Social withdrawal
  • Thin appearance
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Soft, downy hair present on the body (lanugo)
  • Menstrual irregularities or loss of menstruation (amenorrhea)
  • Dry skin
  • Frequently being cold
  • Eating until the point of discomfort or pain, often with high-fat or sweet foods
  • Self-induced vomiting
  • Laxative use
  • Going to the bathroom after eating or during meals
  • Damaged teeth and gums

On Wednesday, March 12, members of The Harold C. Schott Foundation Eating Disorders Program at Lindner Center of HOPE will facilitate a panel discussion about eating disorders.

The event will take place at the Mason Community Center from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
