PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A Portland woman with at least five criminal convictions in the last five years is accused of assaulting her 3-year-old daughter for breaking an iPad.

Portland police and workers from the Department of Human Services responded to a daycare center after a report was made to a child abuse hotline on Feb. 4.

Daycare center workers said after a 3-year-old girl was dropped off by her mother, they noticed injuries to her face.

Workers said Renee Stanfill, 27, told them her daughter had fallen, and they needed to make sure she didn't play rough, according to court documents.

A probable cause affidavit states workers asked the girl about bruising on her face and neck, and she said her mom did it because she broke her iPad.

The child was taken to Randall Children's Hospital, where doctors said her injuries were not consistent with a fall, according to court documents.

The doctor reported that the neck bruising was patterned and not typical from normal play or a fall.

The woman was interviewed by police on Feb. 20. She denied any intentional hitting of her daughter. However, court documents state the woman admitted spanking the girl's backside after she broke a $700 iPad.

Court documents show the woman told detectives she still owed $500 on the iPad.

The probable cause affidavit states the woman told police her daughter went back into her room after being spanked and "must have hit her head while climbing into bed."

The woman also admitted to "snatching" the iPad from the girl and "that is the only thing she can think of about the marks to the neck," court documents state.

The detective's report noted that this story differed from what she reported to the daycare center staff about the girl falling.

Stanfill was arrested on charges of assault and criminal mistreatment.

She posted bail on March 6 and is due back in court March 21.

Court records show Stanfill has multiple arrests and convictions since 2009 when she was convicted of theft and possession of marijuana. In 2011 she was convicted twice on theft charges. In 2013 she was arrested and convicted of driving while suspended and earlier this year she was arrested on the charge of DUII. In that case, she pleaded no contest and entered a diversion program.
