LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The Keaton family values good spelling. Paul Keaton, 12, followed in his older sister's footsteps by winning the Ford Motor Company Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bay on Saturday.

"It feels good to continue on something that we've been so much a part of, " he said.

Younger brother is a seventh grade student at Christ Central School in Pikeville. His older sister, Emily Keaton, won the KDF Spelling Bee each of the past three years.

Keaton's winning word was "chignon,"  a French-derived word for a knot of hair worn at the back of the head.

As the overall champion, Keaton will receive the John & Joan Murphy Memorial Scholarship fund, a $10,000 U.S. Savings Bond. The next four finishers will receive prizes ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. The prize money is provided by the Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation.

Keaton already has his eyes set on a bigger prize.

"The National Spelling Bee is coming up in a couple of months, and I need to get ready for that."
