OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

Police are investigating a murder-suicide after a man and woman were found dead inside a crashed SUV.

Overland Park police were called about 1 a.m. Sunday near College Boulevard and Mastin Street after the vehicle crashed into a fence near a Johnson County sewage station in a commercial area.

The 911 caller originally believed it was an accident, which is what it looked like from the outside. But upon further inspection, the two victims both had gunshot wounds.

They have been identified as 27-year-old Jamie Lee Newkirk and 33-year-old Jason Hershey Crabtree.

A nearby business told KCTV5 News that they heard at least one loud bang overnight, but at the time, they assumed it was a dumpster lid banging shut. No other witnesses had come forward as of Sunday morning.

"If there was anybody that did witness it, we obviously want them to give us a call," Officer Rachel Scattergood said.

Crabtree shot Newkirk before taking his own life. Both lived in North Kansas City.
