COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -

An around-the-clock cleanup is continuing Wednesday on an approximately 10,000 gallon crude oil spill in the Oak Glen Nature Preserve in Colerain Township.

The Environmental Protection Agency has said the oil leaked from a underground pipeline traveling nearly a mile through a creek before pooling into a pond. The cleanup will take at least a week.

Steve Renninger with the EPA said Wednesday officials aren't seeing any impact to the air.

"Really, what we have here is crude oil impacting surface water," he said. "We're rapidly moving with the recovering at this point. We do have about a mile of creek that's impacted. So that's the priority."

Renninger said crews are working in four zones. The zones are the area where the pipe broke, about a mile long stretch of creek that's been impacted by crude oil, a pond area where a lot of crude oil has accumulated and the fourth area is a contingency area to protect the Great Miami River.

Hamilton County Health Commissioner Tim Ingram said there are some private drinking water wells within a zone of the spill. He said Hamilton County Public Health will be sampling water of those wells starting Wednesday.

"We don't expect to find any contamination at this point but yet we need to know," he said. "And I know (residents) do too."

Ingram said residents are concerned about odors coming off the site. He said if residents believe they are becoming sick from odors they should consider staying with relatives until they feel better. He said the health department is willing to visit properties for air monitoring.

Ingram said the area is a restricted one and urged residents to stay out of the area. He said skin exposure to crude oil can cause health effects. Those who have questions about their health or safety can call 513-946-7808.

Renninger said Philadelphia-based Sunoco Logistics, which according to the Associated Press, largely owns the pipeline, is funding the recovery operations.

The company reported the spill at approximately 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Reports came around 8 p.m. Monday of a petroleum and oil smell in the area. Emergency crews responded and found a significant area with oil, including a stream that had been contaminated.

Officials don't know what caused the pipeline to break. It's a 20-inch line several feet underground.

The Hamilton County Health Department is also doing air quality tests. They say so far, levels are normal but they are encouraging any nearby residents who feel nauseated or light headed due to the strong odor to contact their hotline. That number is 513-946-7808.
