(FOX19) -

The Bengals on Thursday signed free agent quarterback Jason Campbell, reuniting the veteran player with offensive coordinator Hue Jackson.

"Jason obviously has extensive playing and starting history," Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said. "And as a back-up (to Bengals starter Andy Dalton), he can provide the stability and experience we're looking for in that role. His experience will be a great asset to our other quarterbacks."

Campbell played with the Browns last season, becoming Cleveland's starting quarterback during the season's eighth game. The Browns released him March 12.

Washington drafted Campbell in the first round (No. 25 overall) in 2005. He played for the Redskins through 2009. Campbell was traded to the Raiders in 2010. He started for Oakland in 2010 and 2011 until being injured. Jackson was Campbell's offensive coordinator in 2010 and his head coach in 2011.

Campbell went to the Bears as an unrestricted free agent for 2012 and to Cleveland as an unrestricted free agent for 2013. He started eight of Cleveland's last nine games last season, missing one because of a concussion. He completed 180 passes on 317 attempts (56.8 percent) for 2,015 yards with 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Last year, Campbell had 100-plus passer ratings in his first two starts (at Kansas City and against the Ravens in Cleveland). He was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his Nov. 3 game against Baltimore, leading a 24-18 win with 23 completions in 35 attempts for 262 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.
