TROUTDALE, OR (KPTV) -

A man arrested for shoplifting on Saturday morning had his skateboard confiscated by police. So, on Saturday afternoon, officers said he tried - and failed - to break into the police department to get it back.

The whole scene was caught by the Troutdale Police Department's surveillance cameras.

A Troutdale officer noticed a door handle missing from the station's main entrance on Saturday night. A check of the building's surveillance system showed an attempted break-in at 2:15 p.m. that day.

In the video, the suspect enters the front vestibule and begins tugging on the main door. He puts his legs up against the glass for extra leverage and pulls until the handle snaps, launching the man backward several feet to the ground.

He then staggers back to his feet and walks out the door with the handle still in his hands.

Officers recognized the suspect as Nathaniel Mirelez, 20, of Wood Village. He had been arrested on shoplifting charges Saturday morning.

At 9 a.m. Monday, Troutdale police again arrested Mirelez, this time on charges of attempted burglary, criminal mischief and theft.

Mirelez told officers he wanted to get in the building to get his skateboard back.

The Troutdale Police Department's office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The inside and outside of the building have video surveillance running 24 hours a day.
