CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Max the dog and Savanna the cheetah had their last play session on Tuesday at the Cincinnati Zoo.

The duo has been companions since September of 2012. Now, zoo employees say that the cheetah has outgrown her dog friend.

"Once the cat starts to not want to play as much, there's not really a purpose for the dog to be here. He did great as a puppy and wanted to play a lot," says Alicia Sampson, an employee of the Cat Ambassador Program at the Cincinnati Zoo. "We're not using him for programs so [Max] can go home to his family and have a happy life running around a farm."

Zoo employees say Savanna will not miss her companion.

"Now she would rather stalk and try to eat giraffes rather than play with her dog anymore," adds Sampson.

The zoo states that Max will go home with a zoo employee and have a happy life on a farm.
