Ride with Blue Angels leaves reporter dazed and confused

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The return of the Blue Angels has had all of Louisville looking up over the past two days. The aerobatic flight team is in such high demand they are booked solid this year at events all over the country. During the Thunder Over Louisville air show, the crowd will see why.

WAVE 3 News Reporter Eric Flack got the chance to experience first hand some of the aerial acrobatics these fighter pilots will do for the crowd. It was a flight he will never forget.

The F/A-18 Hornet hit 5.6 G's just taking off, shooting 500 feet in the air, in one second. By the time the aircraft topped 7 G's Flack briefly passed out, a result of the blood in his chest rushing down into his legs because of the G forces.

The Blue Angels briefed Flack on what to expect earlier that day. They spent almost an hour talking about G Force's and breathing techniques which, if done correctly, will keep someone from passing out.

Flack handled many of the acrobatics well. He laughed in delight as the pilot, Lt. Ryan Chamberlain, performed spins and loops, topping out at speeds of more than 700 miles per hour, which is just shy of the speed of sound.

But Lt. Chamberlain again reminded Flack what it really takes to be Blue Angel. During a final maneuver called a carrier break, the aircraft reached 7.8 G's. Not only did Flack pass out for the second time in the trip, he was so disoriented when he came to he didn't even know he was flying in a jet.

For most of the 45 minute flight, though, he got to take it all in. The thrill of a lifetime.
