The wife of former Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards has been diagnosed with cancer. Elizabeth Edwards learned yesterday that she has breast cancer. The diagnosis came the same day that her husband and John Kerry conceded the presidential race.
Edwards is 55. A spokesman says she discovered a lump in her right breast while on a campaign trip last week and saw a specialist the day after the election, after being told the lump might be cancerous. Edwards' cancer is the most common type of the disease, and the spokesman says more tests are being done to determine how far the cancer has spread and how to treat it. He says the Edwards family is in good spirits and believes this is beatable. John Edwards leaves office as senator from North Carolina in January. In a statement, he said his wife is one of the strongest people he knows and that his family will beat the cancer together.
