TATE TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -

Officers say that an illegal pass is to blame for a head-on crash in Tate Township that sent two to the hospital with serious injuries.

The crash happened just after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday on S.R. 133 in Tate Township.

Police say that Nicholas McKeon, 28, was driving his 2010 Mazda 3 southbound on S.R. 133. Officers say that McKeon attempted to perform an illegal pass in a no pass zone and struck an oncoming 2004 Suzuki driven by 48-year-old Jeffrey Coulter.

Coulter's vehicle then traveled off the right side of the road and struck a ditch.

Authorities say both drivers were trapped in the vehicles and had to be extracted by mechanical means. U.C. Air Care responded to the scene and flew both parties to University Hospital for treatment.

Officers say both parties involved were wearing their seatbelts and alcohol is not suspected.

The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol Batavia Post.
