Boehner mocks GOP on immigration

MIDDLETOWN, OH (FOX19) - House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has never been afraid to bring the tears, and he mockingly did just that on Thursday during a meeting at the Middletown Rotary Club when he talked about his House colleagues' attitude toward taking on the tough issue of immigration reform.

"Here's the attitude: Ohhhh, don't make me do this. Ohhh, this is too hard," Boehner bemoaned during the meeting, scrunching up his face.

"We get elected to make choices. We get elected to solve problems, and it's remarkable to me how many of my colleagues just don't want to … They'll take the path of least resistance.

Boehner has long been trying to bring the issue to the forefront on Capitol Hill.

"I've had every brick and bat and arrow shot at me over this issue just because I wanted to deal with it. I didn't say it was going to be easy," Boehner told the crowd in Madison Township.

The Democrat-controlled Senate passed a bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill last June but the GOP-controlled House has yet to pick it up because the bill includes a path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants.

Boehner is facing three challengers in the May 6 primary, and has recently faced criticism locally for not being present and active enough in his district.
