For someone who is known for her over the top style Johnson loves that this time of year in Louisville anything goes.
"I think for the Derby, everybody can make their own. I think making your own hat is really fun. This is just a beach hat I have and I have all these old flowers I just pin them on," said Johnson. "It's a good occasion to be creative with your pocketbook and shop for a gorgeous hat and dress, but it is also a good time to get artsy, crafty and make your own."
Needing a last minute hat or fascinator? There's nothing like Derby week inside Dee's Crafts on Shelbyville Road.
"We will take about probably 70 orders today that will be due tomorrow, so they will be mostly Derby hats, but we will do that all today," said Dee's owner Kathy Olliges.
From the ready to wear, to the do it yourself or the custom designed whatever you have in mind for race day at Churchill probably isn't too far out of reach. Even if Thurby was your goal.
"We are on the way, nothing like last minute," said Emilee Morgan, of Louisville.
"A lot of out of towners are starting to come in," said Olliges. "We get a lot of that on Thursday, they are starting to arrive and they need a hat."
Like Suzanne Brejc who just arrived in the Derby City on Wednesday from Munich, Germany.
"Actually I just made it to the steamboat race, we went down to the river yesterday, so I have to go shopping for the hats I didn't bring hats from Germany. It's just nicer to buy them here in Louisville," said Brejc.
If you don't have your hat or fascinator just yet don't worry you still have time. Dee's is used to people stopping by as late as Derby morning.
