Neighbor: Accused samurai sword killer called himself the 'devil'

Calvin Ray Jr. Calvin Ray Jr.
DECATUR, GA (CBS46) -

A family member called 911 on Thursday afternoon to report something horrific. Two of her family members had been stabbed to death in the home they shared with their son.

Calvin Ray Jr., 39, was taken into custody hours after the couple were found dead in the 3100 block of Pheasant Drive in DeKalb County.

"It is a pretty horrific scene inside," said DeKalb County Deputy Chief Cedric Alexander.

Police said that Ray was arrested without incident at a nearby park, and identified his mother and father as the victims.

Police said the couple, Calvin Ray Sr., 75, and Betty Ray, 73, were stabbed to death with multiple samurai swords.

A neighbor told CBS46's Mike Paluska that on two separate occasions about a month before the attacks, Ray came to her home and said he was the devil.

"He knocked on my door and said 'I hear you been talking about me,'" Elizabeth Ramseur said Ray told her at the front door. "And I said, 'I don't know who you are.'"

On another occasion Ramseur said that he destroyed her mailbox and damaged some parked cars on the streets. Ramseur also said she often saw Ray in the neighborhood carrying samurai swords.

"It was just weird," Ramseur said. "He was in his backyard and he would be out there swinging the swords practicing, as if he was going to be a samurai warrior or something."

According to court documents, Ray has been arrested before for aggravated assault with possession of a knife or firearm during a crime.

Ray pleaded guilty but mentally ill in those cases and was sentenced to time served plus 10 years of probation.

"Basically, I am sick to my stomach just to hear of it," Dorothy Watkins said.

Watkins lives just a few houses down from the crime scene.

"It brings grief to my heart to know these parents were elderly and to have a son do that to them, so I am really sick to my stomach about it," Watkins said.

Police have not released a motive.
