California Chrome shines bright, winning Kentucky Derby 140

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - California Chrome, with jockey Victor Espinoza aboard, raced to victory Saturday in the 140th Kentucky Derby.

Commanding Curve placed second. Danza finished third.

Horse: Win: Place: Show:
California Chrome $7.00 $5.60 $4.20
Commanding Curve   $31.80 $15.40

The official race time was 2:03.66.

California Chrome is owned by Steve and Carolyn Coburn and Perry and Denise Martin. Trainer Art Sherman said the win was "the biggest thrill I ever had in my life."

Espinoza ran War Emblem to victory in the first two legs of the Triple Crown in 2002.

"I never felt in my dreams that I would win two Kentucky Derbies in my entire career. I was a young guy and I never knew I was going to be a jockey and look at me now. It is an awesome feeling," Espinoza said.

Saturday's Kentucky Derby race was run in front of the event's second-largest crowd ever - 164,906 people, just 401 short of 2012's record of 165,307.

The 1 1/4-mile Kentucky Derby race has been dubbed "fastest two minutes in sports." It is the first leg of the Triple Crown of horse racing. The last horse to win the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes was Affirmed in 1978.

The Preakness will be held on May 17 in Baltimore, Maryland. The Belmont Stakes follows on June 7 in Elmont, New York.
