BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A man found shot to death in Birmingham on Friday night has been identified as Christian author and motivational speaker Kerry Hardy.

Hardy was found shot to death in an alley between Carroll Street and Barbee Street. Police say he was lying against a vehicle's rear driver's door with what appeared to be multiple gun shot wounds to his upper body. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

West Precinct officers responded to the area after gunfire was reported around 9 p.m. Friday.

Hardy, 46, is an ex-convict who served six years in federal prison on drug charges. During his incarceration, he earned his degree and read more than 400 books on self-development and spirituality.

When Hardy was released from prison, he turned his life around, became a motivational speaker and wrote a book. He talked to people about the mistakes he had made in an effort to prevent them from going down the same road.

Hardy's family issued a statement reading in part:

"We are humble [sic] by the many messages of condolences we've received. We don't come across many Kerry Hardy's in a lifetime. He believed that he could make a difference in the world, one child at a time."

Birmingham City Councilman Jay Roberson says he knew Hardy for more than 20 years.

"As you know, God changes anybody and through grace Kerry came back to Birmingham with a heart of wanting to give back to share his life experiences with others and make sure they wouldn't do the same thing," Roberson said.

So far, there have been no arrests in the case.

Police are asking for anyone with information on this case to call Birmingham Police Department Homicide Unit at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
