If you've recently purchased a home, a potential scam reported in Clermont County may fool you out of more than $80.
Officials said private companies have reportedly sent letters to residents requesting that property owners purchase a copy of their deed for a fee of $60 to $80.
Clermont County Recorder Deborah Clepper said she's received a recent
increase in calls regarding the cost to obtain a "certified" copy of a
property owner's deed.
The problem is, a property owner already has a copy of their deed in most cases, which is provided at closing when they purchased the property. And should you need another
copy, Clepper said you can order one through the clerk's office for $2 per page and $1 to
apply the certification stamp and seal. The office staff can even do this while you wait.
"Although this may not be illegal, you will be paying a significantly
higher amount for a record than you would pay by requesting a copy from the
Recorder's Office yourself," Clepper said.
It's a service some homeowners may not realize.
