Body of missing canoeist found, canoe recovered 50 miles downstream

CLERMONT COUNTY, OH (FOX19) -

The body of a 19-year-old man was found in the Ohio River on Friday afternoon. Officials with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources say the body is that of Marty Stanaford, one of two canoeists that went missing last weekend.

The body was discovered on Friday afternoon near Augusta, Ky. by a volunteer on a jet ski. Officials say the body was discovered about eight miles downriver from where the boys put in the water.

The canoe was located on Saturday 50 miles from where it was last seen, according to officials. Crews have continued to search daily for the second missing man.

Cameron Buerger, 20, and Marty Stanaford, 19, both of Troy, Ohio, set out on May 3 from Levanna, about an hour upstream from Cincinnati. They were headed across the river to the Kentucky side.

Sheriff's deputies said the men were last seen early Saturday evening on the shore of Dover, Ky. getting out of the canoe. Their cooler was found near the Meldahl Locks and Dam, less than 20 miles away from where they were last seen.

"It's been a long week, a long week for us, the searchers, the rescuers, the personnel and especially for the families. We got some news that we did recover one of the boys today," said Troy Thompson with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Rescuers are still trying to figure out exactly where the accident happened.

"We're trying everything we can to find out where these guys were when the accident happened. We don't have a pinpointed location, but, we're getting closer and closer," said Thompson.

The search continues for 20-year-old Cameron Buerger.

"We are going 100 percent forward with this. We want to bring Cameron back. We're looking for him right now," Thompson tells FOX19.

Officials said the men were in a green 1999 Old Town canoe that is 15 feet in length and license number OH-1599-ZK. Anyone with information regarding their whereabouts should call 911.
