Sex offenders tracked down in major joint operation

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A major crime operation to get sex offenders in check just wrapped up. Toledo News Now has been working alongside local law enforcement for months to help track down the most wanted sex offenders and all your tips have paid off.

You saw the sweep first - only on WTOL 11 on Wednesday as we worked with US Marshals to sweep these sex offenders off local sweeps.

Now - here's a little background on what went down.

Since March, the U.S. Marshals have been working on a big project to make sure every sex offender in Lucas County was living at the address they registered under on the sex offender registry. They also wanted to locate all the offenders who were not registered at all.

Close to 800 offenders were tracked down in the collaborative effort called Operation Lucas County Look Up and Lock Up. A total of 13 were arrested. The goal was to keep kids safe.

"We as grandparents and parents need to know where these sex offenders are at. We need to share with kids," said Lucas County Sheriff John Tharp.

Now, all but three sex offenders have been located, verified, and are listed on Lucas County's sex offender registry, a tool every parent needs to use to get informed.

"Tell our kids, look, a sex offender lives at this address. Show them the house. Tell them, we don't want you around this house. Stay away from there," said Tharp.

Many offenders registered after being tracked down.

One example of why the U.S. Marshals did this sweep was because one sex offender was found living across from a high school in Toledo. The U.S. Marshals say his original crime was having relations with an underage high school girl.

If you want to take a look at your neighborhood, or neighborhood around your child's school, search the database here.
