CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Negotiating teams for the Cincinnati Board of Education and the Cincinnati Federation of Teachers announced Thursday that they have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract for teachers in Cincinnati Public Schools.
The tentative agreement includes provisions designed to improve the teacher hiring process, give teacher teams greater flexibility to meet student needs, reduce district testing to allow for more instructional time and bring the teacher evaluation process in line with the state system.
The tentative agreement also provides the first across-the-board raises for teachers in six years, increasing the district's ability to be competitive for recruitment and retention of highly qualified teachers with other Hamilton County school systems.
Specific provisions include:
- A 4 percent salary increase retroactive to January 1, 2014; a 2 percent increase for 2015, contingent on stable local funding.
- An agreement to review and reduce the quantity of district-initiated testing to provide for additional instructional time.
- Increased collaboration among special education and regular education teachers to better meet the needs of students with disabilities.
- Adjusting the teacher evaluation system for additional alignment with the Ohio Teacher Evaluation System required by the State.
- An earlier schedule for teacher assignments and transfers, which will be compressed into a six-week period beginning at the end of February, to facilitate recruitment and earlier hiring of teachers.
- Shifting the contract year from a calendar year to a fiscal year for better budget alignment.
- Re-opening health care provisions in the fall.
The Cincinnati school board will consider the agreement at its regular meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 19.
The CFT membership is scheduled to consider the agreement in ratification voting at schools on May 27 and 28 after multiple informational sessions for members only.
