Simon, Mesoraco lead Reds over Phillies

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

One swing of the bat in Devin Mesoraco's return gave the Reds a 3-0 victory Friday in Philadelphia. Alfredo Simon became the first Reds pitcher to reach five wins in a near perfect performance.

Mesoraco, returning off the 15-day disabled list, hit a three-run home run in his first at-bat to give the Reds a 3-0 lead they wouldn't relent.

"I want to drive in runs with two outs and two guys on base," said Mesoraco. "I want to be the guy up there, and for Bryan [Price] to have the confidence in me, it means a lot."

Simon (5-2) pitched 7.2 shutout innings. He also struck out eight batters and allowed just five hits. Aroldis Chapman picked up his second save striking out two in the ninth.

Brayan Pena, filling in for an injured Joey Votto, went 0-for-4 in his first career start at first base. Todd Frazier's 14-game hit streak came to an end going 0-for-4.

The Reds (19-21) face the Phillies (17-22) Saturday night for game two at 7:10 p.m. with Homer Bailey facing Cole Hamels on the mound.
