10 rushed to hospital after house deck collapses

Rescue crews rushed 10 people to the hospital Saturday night after the wood deck of a house collapsed.

Nearly two dozen friends and family celebrated a birthday at a two-story house at 5344 Bridgewater Terrace in Stone Mountain.

They were grilling on the deck when people inside the house said they suddenly heard a "loud boom." They looked out to hear people screaming and sliding down the deck. The grill also slid, burning several people.

"All of a sudden everything was crashing down. People were getting burned and putting out the flames. The speakers fell on my husband's head, hurting him," Althea Brewster said.

Brewster's sister lives in the house. It was her birthday they were celebrating. "I'm praying everyone is OK. People get killed in things like this. I'm glad nobody got killed," Brewster said, choking back tears.

Dekalb County firefighters collapsed the rest of the dangling deck, which stood about 10 feet above ground.

Capt. Eric Jackson said flimsy construction could be to blame. Thirteen people had minor to moderate injuries, including cuts and burns. Three refused treatment.

Brewster said her sister rents the home and moved in just three months ago. She said the deck was already built when she moved in.
