Tri-State local needs your vote to become LLS Woman of the Year

The 10 week Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Man and Woman of the Year Campaign is a competition to see who can raise the most money for LLS.

Each dollar counts as a vote to win the title of Woman of the Year. Tri-State local Jamie Baker stopped by FOX19 to discuss why she needs your vote.

Here is her story:

October 9, 2006 is a day I will never forget. It's the day I sat in the emergency room and heard the words, "We found blasts in your blood, which tells me we might be dealing with some kind of Leukemia." Those close to me will remember the heartbreaking official diagnosis that came only two days later.

The next 23 days were spent at St. Elizabeth East in Fort Thomas where I received chemotherapy and care from the remarkable team of doctors and nurses. Three rounds of consolidation treatment would follow with a handful of hiccups along the way.

It was the roller coaster ride you never plan to go on but if it had not happened, I would never have understood the realities of cancer and what it can do to you, your family and your friends. This opened the door for God to use me as a weapon against cancer and I want to take every opportunity, like this campaign, to share my story and help others find a cure.

While I was recovering from treatments at home, I became very bored. I thought I could start learning how to cook and that way, I could have dinner ready when my family came home from work.

Through my online blog Carepages, I asked family and friends to send me their favorite recipes. After receiving a huge response, I got the idea to compile a cookbook with the recipes, my story and inspirational quotes. I sold the book to raise money for cancer research and that is how The Taste of Hope was born.

Within the first year, the book raised nearly $10,000, all of which was donated to the American Cancer Society. In celebration of the statistic heavy five year mark, I compiled The Taste of Hope Volume II. The books have raised over $15,000 and funds from the second book have gone to five different charities: Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, The Dragonfly Foundation, St. Baldricks Foundation, American Cancer Society and Flying Horse Farms.

This is how I got connected with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I was handing over a check to them on the 7th anniversary of my diagnosis when the LLS representative asked me if I would be interested in the Woman of the Year Campaign.

The campaign kicked off March 21 and goes until May 30. To vote for Jamie, visit her campaign website here: http://www.mwoy.org/pages/soh/cincy14/jbaker
