FORT WRIGHT, KY (FOX19) -

It was an emotional holiday for one Tri-State family as they remember their fallen soldier on the first Memorial Day since he was killed in the line of duty earlier this year in Afghanistan.

Staff Sergeant Danny Tyler Lee was killed in January while serving with the US Army Special Forces Unit.

The city of Fort Wright is going to name a highway after him and Monday his family had a chance to see the sign in person.

"We know he's smiling down on us now, watching us at the pool. That was his favorite place to be," said Danny's sister Jamie Hahn.

It was a day to reflect and honor the life of Danny Tyler Lee.

"We're very proud of his accomplishments and we know that he died protecting us and protecting the United States," said Jamie Hahn.

Lee's father says this day is always special, but now it has a whole new meaning.

"I think we see the importance of it probably a little bit more than we did in the past. It brings a little bit more reality when they're able to associate a person and I think it means a lot more to everybody in our community," said Daniel Lee, Danny's father.

Lee joined the Army in 2007 and rose fast. He served in Iraq on his first tour, and eventually last May, earned his Green Beret as part of the Army Special Forces Unit.

"Very proud, but it's still very hard," said Hahn.

Frances Lee says they all just got back from Fort Bragg, North Carolina and had a chance to meet some of the members of his team.

"They were wonderful. It was great, just like meeting family," said Frances Lee, Danny's mother.

The 2003 Dixie Heights graduate used to be a diver, and his niece paid her own little tribute this afternoon.

"She loves to dive for her uncle Danny," said Jamie Hahn

Danny's father, Daniel Lee says they think the memorial highway sign will be somewhere by the city building, and he and his family are overwhelmed by the community support.

"The city and the counties have done just amazing work to make all this happen," said Daniel Lee.

Along with his parents, Lee leaves behind his wife and infant son, and on a day we recognize all members of the military, Fort Wright honors their local hero.

Since Lee's death, the city of Fort Wright is working on building a fallen soldier monument.

This will pay tribute to all the current and former members of the military.

Lee's family says during their trip to Fort Bragg, they learned that lee received the Bronze Star for valor, the fourth-highest individual military award.
