(FOX19) - Older adults account for only 13 percent of the population but take more than 34 percent of the prescription medications sold and 30 percent of the over-the-counter medications sold.
That is why Skilled Care Pharmacy is telling adults to make sure they know how their medications can interact with food and beverages.
Drew Harmon, a pharmacist at Skilled Care Pharmacy, says that adults should always keep track of their current medications.
"We try to get all the patient to compile a list of all their medications that they're taking and that includes over the counter as well as herbal medications and that allows them to go to their physician so they know everything their taking to try to help prevent interactions," he said.
Harmon said that foods high in vitamin K can decrease the effectiveness of heart medication like warfarin. He also said to be careful with alcohol intake because it can increase the side effects of medication and cause nausea.
