UC Cancer Institute to host "Shark Tank" event for cancer research

Posted: Updated:

The University of Cincinnati Cancer Institute is hosting its own "Shark Tank"-like event in hopes of making an impact on cancer research and treatment.

The event, called "University Retreat for Research: Cincinnati Charge against Cancer/Cancer Curathon," is the first of its kind at UC.

It is a half-day retreat for researchers from both UC and UC medical school campuses. Teams will be made up of members from 10 departments including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, allied health, business, engineering, biology, chemistry, and design, architecture, art and planning.

After a few hours of collaboration, each team will present their proposal of a scientific project that will impact the field of cancer research.  The top proposal will be awarded $100,000 and the group will have one month to formalize their plan.

Dr. Bill Barrett, UC Cancer Institute director, hopes to make this an annual event to showcase the strengths of research in Cincinnati.
