Dry conditions prompt fire restrictions in southeastern AZ

TUCSON, AZ (CBS5) -

There's no rain in the forecast and the already dry conditions have forest officials increasing fire restrictions in southeastern Arizona.

Starting June 5, the following areas will increase campfire and smoking restrictions, consistent with Arizona State Forestry Division fire restrictions already in place statewide, according to a spokesperson from the Coronado National Forest.

  • Bureau of Land Management Gila District
  • All districts of the Coronado National Forest
  • Saguaro National Park
  • Casa Grande Ruins National Monument
  • Coronado National Memorial
  • Chiricahua National Monument
  • Fort Bowie National Historic Site
  • Tumacácori National Historical Park
  • Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument

The following is prohibited:

  • Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove including fires in developed campgrounds or improved sites.
  • Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building.
  • Discharging a firearm except while engaged in a lawful hunt pursuant to state, federal, or tribal laws and regulations.
  • Operating any internal combustion engine, except operating motorized vehicles on designated roads so long as you park in an area devoid of vegetation within 10 feet of the roadway.
  • Welding, or operating acetylene or other torches with an open flame.
  • Using an explosive.

Fireworks are always prohibited.

The fine for violating any restrictions is up to $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for organizations and possible jail time for up to six months. In the event of a fire, violators could be responsible for the cost of putting it out.
