NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Healthy, nutritious eating is an important component for a person fighting a life-threatening disease, but that is often easier said than done.

A Nashville woman, with a deeply personal connection to this, is now doing her part.

Kathie Heimerdinger has a name many Titans fans recognize, and she proves that the commitment made in marriage doesn't always end when a spouse dies.

Her husband, Mike Heimerdinger, passed away in 2011 from a rare form of cancer.

That experience changed her life, so her new life focuses on helping others fighting that disease.

"When Dinger was diagnosed with cancer, it turned our life upside down," Kathie Heimerdinger said.

Treatment, chemotherapy, infusions followed, and after just nine months he was gone.

"But it was through that journey of helping him try to find answers when he was going through his treatment that we came upon the benefit of organic healthy food," Kathie Heimerdinger said.

She created a kitchen full of help and a program called Meals to Heal, creating healthy, appealing meals for cancer patients.

All of her help comes from volunteers, including Nashville teenagers who get to learn about healthy food, leadership and service to others while chopping and slicing cucumbers and potatoes.

And it's all due to Kathie Heimerdinger's incredible, honorable new life.

"What little part I can do to help those going through something my husband went through the last nine months of his life, it's like a service. It's a very enjoyable thing for me to do," she said.

Yes, she called her husband Dinger, just like his many fellow coaches and friends. She says that's how she knew him when they met as friends in the 1970s, and 35 years of marriage never changed that.

There is a big-name celebrity golf tournament this weekend supporting Kathie Heimerdinger's efforts. For more information, visit: https://www.heimerdingerfoundation.com/drive4dinger/.
