MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - The process of creating a parkway design for Shelby Farms has been daunting for those who champion mother nature, but finally, the Shelby Farms Park Conservancy has found a plan it can sign off on.

For years, TDOT, City of Memphis, Shelby County, Federal Highway Administration, and park supporters have worked to create a design that didn't jeopardize the park's environmental and recreational resources.

This final plan is one park officials believe will actually offer benefits to Shelby Farms Park and its visitors. The plan will include improved pedestrian safety and circulation with more than three miles of new pedestrian, bicycle and equestrian trails and three new tunnels that will allow pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians to travel into and around Shelby Farms Park without crossing traffic.

The new plan will also include improved vehicular safety and circulation with safer park entrances and exits. Commuter and "thru" traffic will be moved out of center of the park and over to the western edge through what are now crop fields.

Environmental protections in the new plan will include the following updates:

•More than 200 acres in the center of the property reclaimed as parkland, programmable for public use

• Landscaping with native trees and grasses

• Assurances that the watershed, floodplain and other ecosystems will be protected

• Assurances that Walnut Grove Road will not be widened, and that the funds will be redirected to provide a green bridge over Walnut Grove Road at Patriot Lake (east) for additional park access

The hope is that this information brings comfort to those who have long been concerned about the project.

Tonight on WMC Action News 5 at 6 p.m., Lauren Squires will take a look at a proposal to sell parts Shelby Farms Parks for property tax revenue.
