RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN (WSMV) -

Rutherford County sheriff's officials have arrested the man suspected of firing a shotgun into a beer truck early Friday outside a store on Old Nashville Highway.

Matthew Payton Sparks, 22, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and vandalism.

Sparks is the son of State Rep. Mike Sparks, R-Smyrna, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies said two employees of Ajax Turner avoided being hit when the man allegedly shot into the trailer of the semi.

The workers were preparing to deliver beer at Kountry Korner Market at about 4:30 a.m.

In a release, Deputy Michael Moody said the beer distribution employees were followed by a pickup.

"They saw three men at a pay phone and stayed inside the truck because they felt the situation was suspicious," Moody said.

Moody explained one of the employees spotted the armed man in the beer truck's rearview mirror.

"(The) man was walking up the truck with a shotgun in his hand," Moody said. "He fired a shot from the shotgun that hit the side of the trailer as the beer truck driver drove away."

Sparks was arrested for DUI shortly after the shooting. After the arrest, Sparks was developed as a suspect in the shooting and charged, officials said.
