MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - What reportedly happened to 10-year-old Randy Alexander is shocking, especially when you hear him tell his story.

"I went to the restroom," said Alexander. "I was in the stall. He came behind me and locked the door; then he asked me did I want to get put down in crips [gang]. And I said no. Then he punched me in my jaw ten times. Then he hit me in my lip two times; then he hit me in my chin two times."

Alexander, who was beaten in mid-May, says he was attacked by a man during a break-in basketball action at the Sexton Community Center. The 10-year-old is all healed up now but says, "it felt like something stuck me with a needle in my jaw. Like somebody hit me with a brick."

Police say 22-year-old Rodney Lewis did it.

"We see a fat old lip, a fat old bump on his lip," said his sister Roddrecka Holmes. "And he was like Scam [Rodney] hit me. I said, What? What [did] he hit you for?' He said, 'Because he tried to put me in crips'. I said, 'In crip?' He said, 'Yeah.' I said, 'We going tell your mama right now.'"

Alexander's big sisters are still upset.

"How could you do something like that? You a grown man," said Roddrecka. "That's what I'm saying; you a grown man. How could you do something like that? That's so wrong."

Although Fern Lewis, Rodney Lewis's mother, regrets what her son did, she also worries about his future. She says Rodney was just released from Lakeside a week ago and is supposed to be on mental health medication.

"Rodney been sick for a long time," she said. "I don't know if he did it or not, and I'm sorry if he did. But my son is sick."

She believes her son needs help, not jail.

"It's very heartbreaking because if he go out here, and he kill somebody, I'm hurting," she said. "Or if somebody kill him, I'm still hurting. OK, as a parent with a child that's paranoid schizophrenic, bipolar at the age of 22, what am I supposed to do? I do everything I can do."

Rodney Lewis' bond is set at $50,000 bond. He's due in court on Tuesday.
