Fort Lee inducts 80-year-old into Hall of Fame

With artillery in position and parades passing by, Fort Lee inducted more than thirty people into the distinguished Quartermaster Hall of Fame Friday morning. Among the latest inductees, an 80-year-old woman who has served the military for more than 60 years.

Nancy B. Bain began working for Fort Lee in 1954, right after graduating from Longwood University. She spent 41 years as a civilian employee, shifting roles afterwards to work for the U.S. Army Quartermaster Foundation.

"I was told this award is a deep, deep, dark secret," Bain said in an interview Friday. "I thought, ‘oh my gosh, how can I keep this to myself?'"

Bain was honored for decades of work helping the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps, the branch of the military training service members in essential skills during deployments. Bain continues to work for the Quartermaster Foundation to this day.

Brig. Gen. John O'Neil handed out the gold medallions during Friday's ceremony, a top general who is also one of Bain's long-time friends.

"He recognized me… and it was just, it was so, happy," Bain said. "Just a happy time."

Bain's most notable accomplishments stem from developing support programs for military families. Her programs were a new way of thinking, before support systems military communities know today became commonplace.

Bain said her work with families of those in uniform will always hold her favorite memories.

"It might not sound like much, but it was wonderful, troops coming back from overseas," Bain said. "We would be there in the field house in the middle of the night, with their families. We would have cake and punch and be there with them when the troops came home."

Some of the guests at Friday's ceremony Nancy knew as captains. Now, they viewed the pageantry as generals. After more than sixty years of giving to Fort Lee, Bain said she was honored to receive the Post's gratitude, today.

"I'm so appreciative of everything that has happened to get to this point, in my life."
