In 1953, Charles Michel went to serve our country in the Air Force and was unable to receive his diploma from Roger Bacon High School.

61 years later, he is now an official high school graduate and has the diploma to prove it.

Charles received the diploma on Friday during Roger Bacon's commencement ceremony.

Charles actually attended his graduation in 1953, but was a mere 1.5 credits from getting an official high school diploma. He chose to go into the Air Force and was unable to attend summer school to finish the credits. Still on duty with the Air Force, he took courses to fulfill the requirements in 1956.

As it does, time got in the way and his diploma remained at Roger Bacon High School for more than half a century. Charles married, began a career in sales, had three children and eight grandchildren.

His daughter Jan contacted the school about the diploma, and the registrar was able to track it down.

On Friday he proudly walked across the stage with the Class of 2014 to finally receive his diploma.

"I don't even remember, it was so long ago," is what Charles said when asked which credits he had to make up 61 years ago to get the diploma.
