The father of a 2-year-old Cleveland boy has been charged with one count of aggravated murder.

Cleveland homicide detectives announced the charges Wednesday morning.

Derrice Alexander, Jr. was shot at 2700 Washington. Police say Derrice Alexander, Sr. and his son's mother were arguing around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday when he fired one shot through the door.

The bullet hit and killed his son.

The toddler was rushed to Lutheran Hospital and pronounced dead. The Cuyahoga County medical examiner says he died from a gunshot to the head and neck.

Police say the couple also has a 1-year-old child who was not home at the time of the shooting.

After the shooting, cops say the dad threw the gun into a nearby garbage can and then fled in a car. He was found on West 45th near the Garret Morgan Water Treatment Plant and taken into custody.

Records show the dad has faced charges in the past for assault and domestic violence.

Social workers were called to the home on May 12 for an altercation between the mom and dad.

Two domestic violence cases were dropped against Alexander because the child's mom wouldn't testify.

His lawyer wrote Alexander had completed self help programs, including cage for a rage, and he had learned and benefited from prison time.

Derrice Alexander, Sr. remains locked up in the Justice Center. He is expected to face a judge on Thursday.

Alexander's death brings the number of homicides in the city this year to 47 -- a number that far exceeds where we were at during this same time last year.
