COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - Restaurateur Jeff Ruby is looking to reopen the Covington Waterfront, but this time it will be on land.
The iconic floating restaurant has been closed since it broke loose from the dock in 2011 and drifted down the Ohio River.
Ruby said he doesn't want to take any more chances, especially after the Waterfront went adrift again in February with an employee inside.
"It's sexy to dine on a floating restaurant, but it's not safe sex," Ruby said.
He announced on Thursday that he's in talks to rebuild the restaurant on a concrete platform on Covington landing. The space is designed, he said, but he's still considering financial logistics and engineering before a final decision is made.
"We've got to put the pencil to it and see what it's going to cost to build there," Ruby told FOX19.
The Waterfront barge will be scrapped, but decor from the boat will be kept for the new space.
"It brought a lot of life to the city," Ruby said of the original restaurant. It's far from a done deal, but if it happens, he assured the new version will keep the Waterfront name.
