Pope Francis awarded a Cincinnati nun for her service to the Catholic Church.
Retiring Assistant Superintendent Sister Helen Lucille Habig of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Medal from Pope Francis.
The award was presented to Sister Habig, a Sister of Mercy (South Central Province), during her retirement celebration Wednesday.
Sister Habig worked at several area Catholic schools before she joined the Catholic Schools Office of the Archdiocese acting as assistant superintendent for math instruction.
She eventually became the Director of the Eastern Region of Catholic Schools and taught math classes at Xavier University.
Sister Habig received the St. Peter the Rock award from the Archdiocese in 2013.
Archbishop Dennis Schnurr said he was pleased to petition Pope Francis for this award for Sister Habig.
